Happy Itsenäisyyspäivä!

(no, I did not fall asleep on the keyboard when writing the title. Actual Finnish word)

Snowmageddon! AHHH. Ok, not really. But the first official snow fall has hit our corner of Finland. It's a lot to me, not a lot to anyone who grew up with snow on a daily winter basis. I'd guess a few inches got dumped last night. But there is no melting in sight, and I think it is here to stay : /

NOT even close to this, but I will have those of you who don't read captions believe so (source)
I am the only person in Finland NOT excited for the snow. They love it here. I guess it does make everything look brighter and nicer, but meh, I just don't get it. But at the same time, I don't think they would love 95 degree weather all summer long. So, technically, I don't have to love their winters, lol.

(yes, I am being a baby. This has been one of the nicest and warmest winters on date, I know!)

Today is actually a Finnish holiday. It is Finland's Independence Day. (or Itsenäisyyspäivä. Yeah, say that 5 times fast).

(source)

It's a public holiday celebrating Finland's declaration of independence from that crazy Russian Empire. Although the Finns would have to deal with the Ruskies again in WWII, they declared themselves an independent state back in 1917. The day is marked with a few celebrations and special broadcasts. For some, it means a day of volunteering. In recent years, many Finns have used their day off to serve warm meals to people and families in need. One Finnish girl told me that everyone tunes into the Presidential Independence Day reception on TV to see the grand entrance of all the knights, members of government, archbishops, judges, offices and dignitaries. It is popular to watch more so to see what everyone is wearing than anything else. Maybe Joan Rivers will be there judging all the fashions. Ok, maybe not.

And while I am trapped inside, all stores closed - you better believe I don't like to leave the house when it is all snowy outside - I might have to sustain myself on this:

Aw, look at those cute animals on the tin. They are adorably delicious!

A few weeks ago when I was scanning the shelves for possible Thanksgiving ingredients (like my 5 Euro can of cranberries, sheesh!) I stumbled upon these fine canned meats*. Look closely at the photo. That is Elk, Reindeer and Boar meat, and a bit of lamb in the background, in there. Mmmmmmm, nothing says high-class, white-trash like eating exotic animals straight from the tin. So gross. I don't think I am down to try this, and more so because they cost something like 10 Euro a piece. Steep!

*That combination of 'fine canned meats' has never been used before.

  1. I know you don't like to cook, but you get your happy little butt on over back to the store when it's open and buy a can of each of those happy meats.

'cause you know, we need to see this shiz, for science yo.

  2. This so reminds me of the canned inside of bratwursts here. Like why not just eat the bratwurst? Why have to make it look horrid by canning the insides. It may taste good, but the whole weird packaging thing is enough to turn me off.

STAY WARM - I'll send heat waves becaues I'm headed to Texas tomorrow weeee!

  5. Reminds me of when the Ex hit a deer with the very nice car I bought her. As I was fretting over the dent in the hood, her dad was peeling out of the driveway to collect the tenderized meat before it spoiled. Just the fact it was brought down by a 2,000 pound bullet spoiled it for me. Darned if I didn't get fooled one day into eating deer sausage. If only he had added that bit of class by canning it.

  9. "Fine canned meats". Really is kind of an oxymoron isn't it? So vile.

And holy cow! I can't believe you got that much snow!!!

Just kidding. I read the caption.

  10. Ah, I learn a new word from you. HeHe

I wish I'd see snow drop by my house, but that would be tragic. LOL I'm quite thankful for California weather, but 40 degrees in the morning hurts. (I'm a sissy I know)

Those canned goods are definitely interesting. Not sure we got those here, but I'm curious to try those. :-)

  11. Hmm... canned elk meat? That's not too far fetched I can... They do can it (in jars) here in the west. But the reindeer is a little disturbing. Don't want to get the can with Rudolph in it... HAHA.

  12. "Adorably delicious" lol! I am all for trying new things, but I don't think I'd ever try canned fuzzy animals.

  14. Missouri got its first good snow today as well and I am with you- I would much rather be in AZ right now than freezing cold!

  15. Don't buy cranberries in a can!
I bet they're available in the fresh food section of some store.
As for the meat, vacuum packed meat might also be available. (Or they might have some on the counter.)

  16. Happy Itsenäisyyspäivä!

I must admit that I like freshly fallen snow, but all too soon, it seems to turn wet and slushy and, well, cold!

I do miss snow a little here in Florida. But not the cold.

  17. I can't even begin to think of how to pronounce their holiday! You gotta celebrate somehow. though, right? I say take advantage and drink champagne for their independence!

  18. Oh wow, those canned meats look..umm...yummy. No, no, I'm lying, no they dont. Hope you're staying out of the snow!!

  19. 12.95 for boar? Do I look like the kind of guy that has 'boar' money? Give me some of that reindeer. I'm feeling Christmas-y.

Also, here in Colorado, it's already snowed like 2 feet just in the last 2 weeks, and it's been below freezing for so long that I don't even remember what 'warmth' feels like. Trade ya!

  20. Yum! Canned meats! My favorite! You have to try them, even if they are gross it will be such a great experience! I went camping in Africa and all I could find was canned corned beef and chicken. Not great, I admit, but not totally horrible!

  21. Ahhh, I am excited for the snow! We don't quite have it yet in England, but it has hit Scotland, so I am hopeful. :)

    Happy Itsenäisyyspäivä!

  22. you don't need snow for it to feel like Christmas. But it doesn't hurt, either

  24. Hell, why can it?? Just chuck a hunk of steaming boar onto that thick blanket of snow and freeze the sucker!!! I'm thinking there's a market for canned exotic OZ meats like kangaroo, emu and croc - d'you think it'd take off??!!

Saw a box of Finnish licorice for sale in the Xmas confectionary downunder here today! How weird is that??!!

  25. I think it is only white trash if you kill it, stuff it and eat it ...all yourself! :-)

  26. Yay snow!! I wish it would snow here. If it's going to be 14 degrees when I drag my ass to work in the morning I would like there to at least be some snow too, not just freezing wind.

This is Jordan from trailergypsy, I'm too lazy to log in to my other gmail address, I still haven't finished reading emails in this one. :)

  29. I'm curious - how does your Canadian husband feel about the snow?

    ReplyDelete
  30. You have more snow than I do at the moment. Usually we have a couple of feet of snow already here in the part of Canada I live in. So in a way I'm kind of jealous of you right now!

  31. It has been a warm winter! I am loving it, it hasn't snowed here yet. And that is seriously gross, canned elk meat, etc. I don't think I could try it either!

  32. Listen here young lady - you do this Itsenäisyyspäivä thing and you'll clean it up! HA! I think I am not even going to attempt to say that word...
